Someone mentioned Seichim the other day, and the first thought was, wait, is that just a fancy way of saying Reiki? Turns out no. Turns out there is a whole world of difference hiding behind two words that sound almost the same. Funny how that works. One term gets mentioned, and it just gets filed under the same folder as the other, until someone actually sits down and breaks it apart properly, and suddenly it all makes a lot more sense.

What Reiki and Seichim Actually Are

Let’s start simple. Reiki healing technique comes from Japan, developed by a man named Mikao Usui back in the early 1900s. The word itself breaks down to universal life energy, and practitioners use their hands to channel that energy into you. It’s gentle. It’s calming. It’s probably the one most people have heard of at a wellness expo or seen advertised at their local yoga studio. Chances are, if you have ever booked an energy healing session without knowing much about it, it was probably Reiki.

Seichim healing, on the other hand, traces back to ancient Egypt. Some say it was practiced in temples thousands of years ago, connected to the goddess Sekhmet, who was sort of seen as this powerful healing force. It works with four elements, air, fire, earth, and water, and it leans heavily into the heart-centred side of healing. Where Reiki feels like a warm blanket, Seichim feels more like a deep dive. It’s less about just relaxing and more about actually sitting with whatever comes up.

Both fall under that broad umbrella of energy healing, but they come from completely different histories, and honestly that history shapes how each one feels in practice.

Seichim vs Reiki, What Actually Sets Them Apart

This is probably the bit you clicked on for, so let’s get into it. Here is how they stack up against each other.

  • Origin

Reiki is Japanese. Seichim is Egyptian. Two very different roots, two very different energetic flavours, and honestly two very different stories if you ever get curious enough to read up on them.

  • Energy Quality

Reiki carries more of a masculine, dispersed feel, kind of like light spreading through a room. Seichim is often described as feminine and focused, almost like a laser beam compared to Reiki’s broader glow. Some practitioners say you can genuinely feel the difference the moment hands are placed.

  • Focus Area

Reiki tends to sit with relaxation and general physical balance. Seichim digs deeper into emotional, mental, and spiritual layers. If Reiki is a nice cup of tea, Seichim is the long chat that follows it, the one where you actually talk about what’s going on underneath.

  • Technique

Both use symbols and hands-on methods, but the way each modality applies them differs, and practitioners often say the sensations during a session feel noticeably different too, sometimes warmer, sometimes more like a pulling or shifting sensation.

Ever had two things look almost identical from the outside but feel completely different once you actually experience them? That’s basically Reiki and Seichim in a nutshell. Kind of like two cousins who look alike in old photos but have totally different personalities once you get to know them. It’s the same feeling you get walking into a holistic counselling centre expecting one thing and leaving with something else entirely; sometimes the biggest differences are the ones you can’t spot until you’re actually in it.

Can You Combine the Two, and Which One Suits You

Can You Do Both?

Short answer: yes, you absolutely can. A lot of energy healers blend Reiki and Seichim together, sometimes called Sekhem Seichim Reiki or SSR for short. The idea is you get the grounding comfort of Reiki alongside the deeper emotional reach of Seichim. Best of both, really, and some practitioners swear the combination creates a kind of layered healing that neither one manages alone.

Which One Should You Try

That depends on what you are chasing. Want simple stress relief, something gentle to unwind after a long week? Reiki might be your thing. Looking for something that goes further, touches on emotional healing or even spiritual growth? Seichim could be worth exploring.

Honestly though, energy healing is not one size fits all. Some people try Reiki first, then move into Seichim later, almost like working their way up. Others jump straight into Seichim and never look back. Maybe the real answer is to try both and see what your body and mind respond to, because sometimes you just can’t know until you are lying there with someone’s hands hovering over you.

At the end of the day, both paths lead somewhere similar: a bit more balance, a bit more calm, a little more connection to yourself.

Which one calls to you? If you are still turning it over in your head, that is completely normal; these things take a bit of sitting with. Leticia has spent years working with both energies and is always happy to chat through what each one actually feels like before you decide anything. Get in touch today to learn more about this.

FAQs

Q: Is Seichim just another name for Reiki?

Not quite. They both tap into the same universal energy source but come from completely different origins, Reiki from Japan and Seichim from ancient Egypt, and they tend to feel different in a session too.

Q: Do I need to choose just one, Reiki or Seichim?

Not at all. Plenty of people try both, and some practitioners even blend the two into a single approach often called Sekhem Seichim Reiki, or SSR.

Q: How do I know which one is right for me?

It really comes down to what you need at the moment. If you’re after simple relaxation, Reiki might do the trick. If you’re looking for something that goes a bit deeper emotionally or spiritually, Seichim could be worth trying.
